Privacy Policy

Intentional YouTube ("the extension," "we," "our") is a Chrome extension designed to help you watch YouTube more mindfully by setting intentions and checking in with your emotions before and during viewing sessions.

This policy explains what information the extension accesses, how it's used, and what we do — and don't do — with it.

What We Collect and Why

Local storage (on your device only)
The extension uses Chrome's local storage to save:

This data stays on your device. It is not transmitted to us, sold, or shared with any third party. We do not operate a server that receives this information.

YouTube searches (to find videos for you)
When you type what you want to watch, the extension sends that text to YouTube's official search API (operated by Google) to find matching videos. This is core to how the extension works — it's the same kind of search you'd do directly on youtube.com, just initiated from within the extension.

Video playback and thumbnails
The extension loads YouTube's official video player and thumbnail images to show you videos within the app. Because this uses YouTube's own embedded player, standard YouTube playback behavior applies — Google may set cookies and receive normal playback information the same way it would if you watched directly on youtube.com.

Google Account access (upcoming feature, not yet active)
A future version of the extension will let you connect Google Calendar to schedule your intentional viewing sessions — for example, creating a calendar event for your next planned session. This feature is currently in development and is not yet available to users.

When this feature does become active, calendar access will only be requested when you explicitly click "Connect Calendar," and will not be used for any other purpose. We will not access, read, or store the contents of your Google Calendar beyond what's needed to support that specific feature. This policy will be updated to reflect the change before the feature goes live.

Fonts
The extension uses the Inter font, which is bundled directly within the extension package. No external font request is made to Google Fonts or any other server.

AI-assisted features (not currently active)
The extension has built-in support for optional AI-assisted features (such as smarter search and automatic course organisation) powered by Anthropic's API. These features are currently disabled in the published version. If enabled in a future update, using them would send the relevant text (such as your search query or saved video titles) to Anthropic for processing, and this policy will be updated accordingly before that happens.

What We Do Not Do

Permissions Explained

Permission Why we need it
storage To save your intentions, settings, and session data locally on your device.
identity To support an upcoming Google Calendar connection feature (currently in development). Not used unless you click "Connect Calendar."
Host permissions
(YouTube, Google APIs)
To search and display YouTube videos, and to support optional Google Calendar integration.

Data Retention and Deletion

Since your data is stored locally on your device, you can delete it at any time by removing the extension or clearing its storage via Chrome's extension settings. We do not retain copies elsewhere.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the extension after changes means you accept the revised policy.
